Medications
Although many of the prescription medications available overseas are now readily available in China, expatriates should assume they are not and are advised to bring all essential medications, both for daily use and emergency use, including but not limited to asthmatic inhalers and birth control pills. In addition, we recommend that expats bring a personal first aid kit. Many prescription medications found overseas are available in China without a prescription, and even antibiotics can be purchased over the counter (OTC) at many pharmacies, so expats are warned to practice care in selecting and consuming all medications. Remember that some medications offered may not be therapeutic and maybe manufactured to lesser standards.
Many physicians in China prescribe western medicine or a combination of western and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Not all medicines prescribed by physicians in China have English packaging, instructions or notification of contraindications. It is your responsibility to know what medicine you are consuming and to what medicine you are allergic to.
Our medicines:
The Foreigners Medical Clinic (FMC) carry a number of medications that are not easily sourced either in the hospital pharmacy or at external pharmacies. The price of these medications is a little higher than what they can be purchased for at an outside supplier, but they are not easy to locate. The hospital pharmacy is controlled strictly by the Health Bureau and city government, which has both positive and negative consequences. The positive being that the pharmacy is more likely to have medications that are more strictly controlled quality wise. The negative is that due to the hospital providing services to holders of the government medical insurance, the government in-turn has direct control over what medications the hospital can prescribe/sell. Therefore this has a direct effect on what can be prescribed directly from the hospital pharmacy.
All medications dispensed or prescribed from the clinic will be explained on the use, frequency, duration and possible side effects, irrespective if they are provided by the hospital pharmacy or the clinics imprest. Medication labels are clearly written in English. Remember to always take medication according to the instructions on the label, even if you start to feel better or your signs & symptoms disappear, continue to take the medication as directed.
Repeat medicines:
If you would like any medications 'repeated' then you must bring those medications with you to your consultation if you are a first time patient to FMC. Often tests need to be undertaken periodically for those patients on long term medication for chronic conditions, and these are done in accordance with best clinical practice. You maybe required to undertake tests to determine whether continued use of your medication is appropriate. We will not prescribe any medications (even long term medications) if a patient either refuses to undertake such tests or does not otherwise provide evidence of such tests undertaken elsewhere (i.e. furnishes copies of test reports or a Doctor's letter). Most clinicians will provide you a letter for you to furnish to an alternative clinical provider.
